JOLIET -- The star player in a downtown street brawl that was videotaped and posted on the Internet was jailed for a second time on felony charges Tuesday.
Rory Sabino, 27, of 411 W. Mondamin St. in Minooka, was taken into custody at his Tuesday morning court appearance regarding previous misdemeanor battery charges that stemmed from an August fight outside McBrody's Bar & Grill.
At the hearing, Sabino saw the charges boosted to four felony counts of aggravated battery, a charge of felony mob action and a misdemeanor count of aggravated assault.
Previously free on $5,000 bail, Sabino was jailed in lieu of his new bond of $25,000.
Sabino already had been arrested on felony charges but the charges were reduced to misdemeanors that subsequently were upgraded back to felonies.
Footage posted online
The downtown donnybrook Sabino was arrested in connection with drew a national audience after a visiting Minnesotan captured it on film and posted it on the Internet video sharing site youtube.com.
Soon after it was posted, the Web site removed the series of videos, which the amateur filmmaker entitled "Joliet Bitch Fight," parts I-III, but not before it caught the attention of the authorities. The Minnesota man, who was in town for a Golden Tee video golf tournament, later turned over a DVD copy of the film to investigators.
The film depicts Sabino as the chief instigator of the fracas.
A bill of indictment handed down last week charges that he threw a woman to the ground, punched three different men, and cocked his fist at a Lockport police officer.
The officer, who happened by the fight and was the first cop on the scene, eventually sprayed Sabino's face with Mace, incapacitating him. Sabino is seen on the film crumpling to the sidewalk and struggling out of his shirt.
Channahon man charged
Sabino joins Channahon's Ruben Dunavan as the defendants in the case. Dunavan, 26, of 24431 Rock Ridge Court, also was indicted by the grand jury and faces felony charges of aggravated battery and mob action. Dunavan allegedly punched a man and threw a woman to the street.
Charles B. Pelkie, spokesman for the state's attorney's office, said others involved in the fracas may yet be charged.
"Other aspects of the case remain under investigation," Pelkie said.
JOLIET -- The telltale tape of a fight outside a downtown tavern has landed a second man in jail.
A grand jury indicted one of the men involved in the videotaped brawl. Ruben Dunavan, 26, of 24431 Rock Ridge Court in Channahon was charged with mob action and two counts of aggravated battery -- all felonies -- in connection with the August fight outside McBrody's Bar & Grill.
A visiting Minnesotan captured the fracas on videotape and posted a trilogy of films on the Web site youtube.com entitled "Joliet Bitch Fight 2007," parts I-III.
One man, 26-year-old Rory Sabino of 411 W. Mondamin St. in Minooka, was arrested on felony charges the night of the fight. The charges later were reduced to misdemeanors.
Youtube.com, a video-sharing site where users can upload, view and share video clips, cut off access to the series soon after it was posted.
A detective was still able to track down and contact the amateur cinematographer behind the trilogy.
The man, who happened to be in town for a video golf tournament the night the fight erupted, provided police with a DVD copy of the film.
Detectives and prosecutors pored over the video and determined to bring Dunavan, who police said is an unemployed carpenter, before the grand jury.
Police picked up Dunavan on Thursday night at a residence on Emery Street. He was booked into the county jail and held in lieu of $25,000 bond. And Dunavan may soon have company in the county.
"Other aspects of the case are under investigation and future charges are possible," said Charles B. Pelkie, spokesman for the state's attorney's office.
The charges against Dunavan stem from him punching a man and throwing a woman to the street.
A man on the video, presumably Dunavan, is clearly seen tackling a woman and hurling her to the ground.
The episode winds down with a Lockport police officer happening by and trying to restore order.
